Jackson Brown. The author wrote the book as a gift for his son who was heading off to college. With two children in university and another heading that way in few years, I was intrigued. I sat on the floor of the basement and starting reading, and then tucked the book into the bin of stuff going up to the chalet for the Christmas holidays.<\/p>\n<p>Over the holidays, I pulled out the book to stimulate dinner conversation and our family took turns reading five instructions at a time. While some of the instructions were out of date, such as: \u201cOwn a great stereo system\u201d, and \u201cLearn how to operate a Macintosh computer\u201d, most of the instructions were relevant and great food for thought.<\/p>\n<p>There are 511 instructions in Life\u2019s Little Instruction Book. Here are a few that ring true with me.<\/p>\n<p>#42 Write \u201cthank you\u201d notes promptly. (Prompting me to encourage the kids to write emails to thank relatives for Christmas gifts)<\/p>\n<p>#2 Have a dog. (Done, we have 2)<\/p>\n<p>#23 Floss your teeth. (Memories of my Mom)<\/p>\n<p>#164 Be punctual and insist on it in others. (My Dad)<\/p>\n<p>#188 Become the most positive and enthusiastic person you know.<\/p>\n<p>#463 Be open to new ideas.<\/p>\n<p>#470 Don\u2019t interrupt.<\/p>\n<p>#300 Don\u2019t expect life to be fair.<\/p>\n<p>#511 Call your mother.<\/p>\n<p>Once we finished the book, I asked the family to take some time and each write five of their own instructions. I shuffled the collection and read them on New Year\u2019s Eve.<\/p>\n<p>Here is the Hill family\u2019s version of Life\u2019s Little Instruction Book:<\/p>\n<p>1. Take family ski trips.<br \/>\n2. Work hard; play hard.<br \/>\n3. Own a dog and go for a long walk every day.<br \/>\n4. Keep a hard copy agenda.<br \/>\n5. Don\u2019t give up after the first failed attempt.<br \/>\n6. Strive to communicate in the fewest number of words.<br \/>\n7. Try hard at everything you do.<br \/>\n8. Be willing to admit defeat; nobody likes a sore loser.<br \/>\n9. Have your own variation of religion.<br \/>\n10. Read the rulebook and follow the rules.<br \/>\n11. Teach something to yourself.<br \/>\n12. Practice what you preach.<br \/>\n13. Being genuine is better than being fake.<br \/>\n14. Trying and failing is much better than never trying.<br \/>\n15. Life begins at the end of your comfort zone. Confront fears.<br \/>\n16. Keep your friends close.<br \/>\n17. Take the road less travelled.<br \/>\n18. Spend quality time with your family. Friends will come and go, yet your family will always be there for you.<br \/>\n19. Ask for others\u2019 opinions and don\u2019t be afraid to give your opinion.<br \/>\n20. Take the high road. Learn to forgive and move on.<br \/>\n21. Learn to cook. You will eat healthier and save money.<br \/>\n22. Aim for goals greater than you think you can achieve.<br \/>\n23. You only live once. Make the most of every moment.<br \/>\n24. Don\u2019t waste too many hours each day in front of a screen.<br \/>\n25. Watch good movies.<\/p>\n<p>26. AND one final instruction for this blog&#8230; share your favourite recipes with friends and family. Thanks to my friend Dianne, who shared this recipe with me. It is delicious!!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Beef Teriyaki<\/strong><br \/>\nAdapted from ricardocuisine.com<\/p>\n<p>It is usually recommended to brown meat in a skillet before putting it in a slow cooker, to enhance the flavours. Not with this recipe, though. The sauce is particularly concentrated, so the meat ends up being incredibly flavourful.<\/p>\n<p>3 T brown sugar<br \/>\n2 T cornstarch<br \/>\n\u00bd c chicken broth<br \/>\n2 lb. flank steak, cut against the grain in \u00bc-inch thick strips<br \/>\n\u00bd c ketchup<br \/>\n\u00bc c soy sauce<br \/>\n\u00bc white wine<br \/>\n2 cloves garlic, finely chopped<br \/>\n2 t finely chopped peeled fresh ginger<br \/>\n\u00bd t sesame oil<br \/>\n1 t garlic chili sauce<br \/>\n2 carrots, peeled and sliced into sticks<br \/>\ntoasted sesame seeds<br \/>\nsalt and pepper<\/p>\n<p>In the slow cooker, combine the brown sugar, cornstarch and broth. Add the remaining ingredients, except for the sesame seeds. Season with salt and pepper. Mix thoroughly.<\/p>\n<p>Cover and cook on low for 4 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Serve over jasmine rice or rice vermicelli.
